Frequently asked questions

Are these tools really free?

Yes - every tool and guide on this page is free, with no ads and no sign-up. Polarbear makes money from its optional AI study app, not from these tools.

Where does the data come from?

Every figure is traced to an official source: VTAC scaling reports for the ATAR calculator, UAC scaling data for HSC pages, QTAC reports for QCE pages, and TISC data for the WACE calculator and pages, with exam dates from VCAA, NESA, QCAA and SCSA. Each page cites its source and the report year.

Is the ATAR calculator result official?

No - it's an indicative estimate for planning. Study scores are set by VCAA and the official ATAR is calculated by VTAC. Treat any calculator's output, including ours, as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Is there an HSC or QCE ATAR calculator?

Not yet - and that's deliberate. UAC and QTAC don't publish the data needed for an honest marks-to-ATAR calculator, so instead we publish what IS official: UAC's HSC scaling data (full percentile tables where UAC publishes them, summary figures for small cohorts) and QTAC's scaling for the 44 QCE subjects it reports (cohorts under 50 students are withheld). Tools for more states are coming where official data allows.

When is the data updated?

As each authority publishes its new report - VTAC and UAC from December, QTAC in the new year - we re-verify and re-stamp the affected pages. Each page cites the source report and its year.
