Polarbear vs ChatGPT for studying

ChatGPT is the AI tool most Australian students already use for study help - and for general questions it's excellent. The comparison that matters is specificity: ChatGPT knows a bit of everything, while Polarbear is built around the VCE, HSC and QCE - marking essays against your criteria, drilling exam-style questions, and backing its ATAR tools with official admissions data.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You want one general assistant for everything - code, cooking, homework
  • You're comfortable prompting and checking answers yourself
  • Your subjects sit outside the Australian senior curricula

Choose Polarbear if…

  • You want essay feedback graded against how your subject is actually assessed
  • You're preparing for VCE/HSC/QCE exams and want curriculum-specific practice
  • You want ATAR numbers that come from VTAC/UAC/QTAC, not a model's memory

Trying it takes two minutes

You don't have to switch - most Polarbear students still use ChatGPT for general questions. Try the difference on one essay: paste it into Essay Marking and compare the criteria-based feedback with a generic prompt.

Our verdict

ChatGPT is the better general assistant; nothing touches its breadth. Polarbear is the better study tool for Australian Year 11–12: essay marking against real assessment criteria, exam-style practice, and ATAR tools built on official data rather than model memory. Many students use both.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT good enough for VCE or HSC study?

For explanations and brainstorming, yes. Its weak points are current, curriculum-specific accuracy - assessment criteria, scaling and ATAR numbers - where it can confidently quote outdated or invented figures. For those, use tools grounded in official data.

Can ChatGPT calculate my ATAR?

It will try, but it has no reliable access to current VTAC scaling tables and often gets aggregation rules wrong. Polarbear's ATAR calculator applies the official published scaling data and shows its source.

Should I use Polarbear or ChatGPT for essay feedback?

ChatGPT gives useful general feedback. Polarbear's Essay Marking is built specifically around how Australian senior essays are assessed and pairs feedback with a library of real students' essays, which makes the difference visible.
