QCE Mathematical Methods Past Papers (Mathematics)

QCE Mathematical Methods external assessment is worth 50% of your final result and is examined as two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2). It's one of the highest-scaling QCE subjects, so the external exam carries real weight.

QCAA introduced external assessment with the current QCE system in 2020, so there are only a handful of past papers per subject — which makes each one worth sitting properly under timed conditions.

Official Mathematical Methods external assessment papers (from 2020)

QCAA publishes the past external assessment papers, marking guides and subject reports for Mathematical Methods in the Resources → Past papers section of its official syllabus page. They are the exam questions themselves — sit them under timed conditions.

What's on the Mathematical Methods exam?

The EA examines Units 3 and 4 — calculus (differentiation and integration), the logarithmic and exponential functions, and probability and statistics including the normal distribution and sampling. The two papers combine short-response technique questions with extended problem-solving.

Because it's 50% of your result, the exam is worth as much as all your internal assessment combined — past papers are the closest thing to the real test.

How to use the past papers

Do each paper to time, then self-mark against the QCAA marking guide — for Methods, the marking guide is especially useful for seeing how working and reasoning earn marks even when a final answer slips. The subject report flags the questions the state cohort found hardest each year.

All are in the Resources section of the official syllabus page linked above.
