QCE English Past Papers (English)
QCE English external assessment is a single written exam worth 25% of your final subject result — an analytical response to an unseen text, set and marked by the QCAA against a published marking guide.
QCAA introduced external assessment with the current QCE system in 2020, so there are only a handful of past papers per subject — which makes each one worth sitting properly under timed conditions.
What's on the QCE English exam?
The English EA asks you to write an analytical essay responding to a previously unseen text under timed conditions. It rewards a clear line of argument, precise use of textual evidence, and controlled, purposeful language — the same skills the internal assessments build, applied to a text you haven't prepared.
Because it's 25% of your result, it can move your grade but won't decide it alone — your three internal assessments carry the other 75%.
How to use the past papers
Sit a whole paper in one timed session first, then mark it against QCAA's external assessment marking guide for that year — the marking guide shows exactly what distinguishes a top response. Read the matching subject report afterwards: it summarises what the state cohort did well and badly, which is effectively free feedback from the examiners.
