QCE Chemistry Past Papers (Sciences)

QCE Chemistry external assessment is worth 50% of your final result and is examined across two papers. It's a calculation-heavy exam, so working through past papers to time is the most effective preparation.

QCAA introduced external assessment with the current QCE system in 2020, so there are only a handful of past papers per subject — which makes each one worth sitting properly under timed conditions.

Official Chemistry external assessment papers (from 2020)

QCAA publishes the past external assessment papers, marking guides and subject reports for Chemistry in the Resources → Past papers section of its official syllabus page. They are the exam questions themselves — sit them under timed conditions.

What's on the Chemistry exam?

The EA examines Units 3 and 4 — equilibrium, acids and redox, and the chemistry of structure, synthesis and design (organic chemistry, reaction pathways and analytical techniques). Expect a mix of multiple-choice, short-response calculations and extended reasoning.

At 50% of your result, the external exam is worth as much as all three internal assessments together.

How to use the past papers

Do each paper under timed conditions with your data booklet, then mark against the QCAA marking guide — for Chemistry, the guide shows exactly how method and units are credited in calculation questions. The subject report highlights the reactions and calculation types the state cohort struggled with each year.

All are in the Resources section of the official syllabus page linked above.
