How GCSE grades work: the 9–1 scale
GCSEs in England are graded 9 to 1, where 9 is the highest and U means ungraded. It replaced the old A*–G scale in 2017 — and it isn't a simple rename. Here's what each grade actually means, and how the marks behind them are decided — sourced to Ofqual and the exam boards, not folklore.
The 9–1 scale
Since 2017, GCSEs in England have used a numerical scale from 9 (highest) down to 1 (lowest), with U for ungraded (Ofqual). It has nine grades where the old letters had eight, which is the whole point — it spreads out the top end so universities and employers can tell apart students who'd all have got an A or A* before.
How 9–1 maps to the old A*–G
There are exactly three official anchor points between the two scales (Ofqual). Everything in between is a genuine change of standard, not a straight swap:

Standard pass vs strong pass
The government defines grade 4 as a "standard pass" and grade 5 as a "strong pass" — a 5 is equivalent to a high C and low B on the old grading (AQA). Grade 4 matters for a practical reason: it's the level you need in English and maths to avoid having to resit them post-16.
Is a grade 9 the same as an A*?
No — and this is the single most common myth. Grade 9 is a new grade above the old A*, not a rename of it (Ofqual). It's deliberately harder, and fewer 9s are awarded than there were A*s. The share is set by a formula:
Across all subjects, that works out at roughly the top 20% of grade-7-and-above students getting a 9.
Grade 8, meanwhile, isn't judged directly at all — its boundary is set exactly halfway between the grade 7 and grade 9 boundaries (AQA).
How grade boundaries are set
Your grade comes from your single overall subject mark measured against that subject's grade boundaries — not from combining grades on individual papers. Boards do publish "notional" per-paper boundaries, but they label those illustrative only (AQA).
Crucially, boundaries are set after every paper is marked. Only then can senior examiners see how hard students actually found the exam and place the boundaries so that a given standard of work earns the same grade as it would have in another year — a principle called comparable outcomes, which blends statistical predictions from students' prior (key stage 2) attainment with examiner judgement (AQA).
Why boundaries change every year
Because a grade boundary is not a fixed pass mark set in advance. If this year's paper was harder, the boundary drops; if it was easier, it rises. A lower boundary almost always means a tougher paper, not a "dumbed-down" exam. This is why a previous year's boundary is never a safe prediction for the current year — and why we publish multiple years of real AQA boundaries side by side rather than a single "the grade 7 boundary is X" number.
Foundation vs Higher tier
Some subjects are tiered: maths and statistics, the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and combined science) and modern foreign languages (Ofqual).
- Higher tier targets grades 9–4, with grade 3 available as a narrow "safety net" (half the width of a normal grade) for students who just miss a 4.
- Foundation tier targets grades 5–1 — the top grade available is a 5.
- Untiered subjects (like English language and literature) put everyone on the same paper set with all grades 9–1 available.
Combined Science is a special case: it's a double award worth two GCSEs, graded on a paired scale (9-9, 9-8, 8-8 … down to 1-1) rather than a single number.
