QCE Subject Combinations for a High ATAR 2026

Data source: QTAC ATAR Report, Table 6 (2025) · 2025 data · checked July 2026How we verify →

Your QLD ATAR comes from your best 5 scaled subject results. So a high-ATAR combination is really three decisions: take five subjects that count, pass an English subject, and include enough high-scaling subjects to reward a strong result. Here are the rules that shape it — with QTAC scaling data, not guesswork.

The rules that shape your combination

Example high-ATAR combinations

Illustrative five-subject line-ups, with each General subject's 2025 scaled median (out of 100) from QTAC's report. These are examples to show how scaling stacks up — not a prescription. Pick for fit and prerequisites.

Maths + science (STEM / health / engineering)

Two high-scaling maths plus the physical sciences — the classic path to the highest ATARs, and the prerequisite set for most STEM degrees.

Commerce + humanities

A strong all-round line-up for business, law and arts pathways, anchored by Methods and Economics.

Balanced science + commerce

One maths, a mix of sciences and a commerce subject — broad options without committing to Specialist Maths.

One honest caveat: scaling is a tie-breaker, not a strategy. A strong result in a subject you enjoy beats a mediocre one in a "high-scaling" subject you don't. Build your five around what you're good at and the prerequisites your degree needs — then let scaling do the rest.
