QCE Subject Combinations for a High ATAR 2026
Your QLD ATAR comes from your best 5 scaled subject results. So a high-ATAR combination is really three decisions: take five subjects that count, pass an English subject, and include enough high-scaling subjects to reward a strong result. Here are the rules that shape it — with QTAC scaling data, not guesswork.
The rules that shape your combination
- Best 5 scaled results. QTAC scales every subject to a common scale, adds your best five into a subject aggregate, and ranks every student to set your ATAR. Read the full mechanism on how the QCE ATAR works.
- Five General, or four General + one Applied/VET. You need five subjects that count. General subjects carry the published scaling; an Applied subject or a VET Certificate III+ can be your fifth, but generally scales lower — so the highest ATARs usually come from five General subjects.
- English is a gate, not a guarantee. You must pass an English subject (grade C or better) to be eligible, but it only lifts your aggregate if it's one of your best five.
- Scaling rewards strong cohorts. A high-scaling subject lifts your aggregate more for the same effort — but only if you actually do well in it.
